OUR PROGRESS

CJCRO was formed in 2009. Thanks to the generous benevolence of members of the Czernowitz EHPES List as well as many others with an interest and devotion to the history and culture of Bukovina, we were able to begin the work of restoring the cemetery in 2010. The results of our efforts became apparent quite rapidly and they continue to this day.

Examples of work performed and the extent of the difficulties encountered on an ongoing basis

Contracted workers started by concentrating on the cutting and removal of the pervasive thick native vegetation which is prevalent in this area.

After two years of clearing the invasive bushes and watching them regrow, it became clear that this process would need to be part of the ongoing maintenance of the cemetery and not a one-time effort.

Promising results were obtained following a suggestion from a volunteer group from Germany to use herbicides to curb the growth of the vegetation.

We consulted with the leadership of the Botany and Forestry Departments of the University of Chernivtsi. The experts identified the most prevalent species of invasive vegetation to target with herbicides. Their recommendation was accepted and following the removal of the thickest vegetation the teams of workers began the spraying of herbicides on a regular yearly basis.

The beginning of every summer brings the growth of the pervasive annual vegetation. The use of herbicides has been invaluable in maintaining the growth to a manageable level.

WE NEED YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT

The work of CJCRO is a continuous challenge. When an area is cleared and restored, it is only the beginning. It will require continuous maintenance, or it will quickly revert to its previous unkempt state. The results of the labor-intensive work and the expense invested in past years will be lost and the work will have to commence from almost the beginning.

Your financial contribution will assure the long term survival of this unique monument to what was the great Jewish Community of Czernowitz.
